Tunnelers

Even below the surface Selene could still feel the rumble of artillery firing. The gas hadn’t reached the inside of the tunnels, so her troops were free to unmask while they remained below. After being trapped in their hoods for a significant period of time the lack of obstruction in front of their ears made the sound of the artillery even more distinct.

They had been going on for the better part of the day, and that was after a huge barrage yesterday. She had been out of contact with the main Hydra forces for several days, but it didn’t take a genius to figure out what had happened. The only question was, how much had it cost them?

Actually, she mused, there was another question that needed an answer. What could her troops do to help the situation? At this point they were completely useless, trapped in the districts sewers trying to find a way back to friendly lines. Their previous attempts had lead nowhere, and Selene didn’t dare show their faces on the surface. They hadn’t run into trouble yet, but one wrong step would get them all killed.

They’d have to try a different route. At this point Selene had given up trying to head east and instead directed her troops west, heading toward the borders of the city. It was risky, but if they could find some way to get outside the city limits they could call for a helicopter extraction. If command wasn’t willing to risk the machines, they could always travel back to friendly lines on foot. The airport district wasn’t too far away, and once they made it they could be back at the front lines in no time.

Of course, all that would take time. All three of her squad commanders had voiced concerns about the whole affair. Gavin had suggested they head for the surface and then make a break for their own lines: whatever casualties they suffered would be worth it, because they would respawn in Cudahy. It would cut down on wasted time and allow them to get back in the fight sooner.

Selene understood his reasoning, but she still went with her plan. True, the troops killed in the attempt would respawn, but their skills would be severely diminished. It would take time to get them back up to strength, and she wasn’t certain how much good they would actually do on the front lines in that state.

And, though she hated to admit it, pride played a bit of a role in it as well. Selene didn’t want to just give up and let the enemy win, even though that might be the most prudent course of action. Simply taking their masks off and walking out into the gas cloud might have the greatest effect. Ragnarok would have to deal with over thirty zombies roaming around behind their lines, and it would get her troops back to their side very quickly.

But she wasn’t going to lay down and die, and she wasn’t going down without a fight.
